You may have heard of the controversial decision by Anderson to prohibit smoking tobacco products and e-cigarettes outdoors in the downtown area along a one mile stretch of Main Street and between Franklin and Greenville Streets. I personally agree with the decision based on my belief that smoking and even being exposed to second hand smoke poses a serious health concern. Even though I don’t smoke, I was exposed to second hand smoke beginning when I was only 9 years old. The ban also applies to within 25 feet of the sidewalks. In addition to downtown Anderson, the ban also covers all city parks and facilities. Assistant city manager Andrew Strickland says there will be an educational campaign to make people aware of the ban before it goes into effect. When I think about what I may have to deal with, health wise, I thank you Anderson for your decision.
